Australia Just Gave Uber Eats Riders a 25% Pay Rise — Kiwi Drivers, Take Notes

Big news from across the ditch this week 🇦🇺: Australia's Fair Work Commission has locked in a minimum pay order for Uber Eats and DoorDash delivery workers, kicking in 17 August. Riders and drivers who've been averaging around $24/hr are getting bumped to a guaranteed $31.30–$32/hr depending on what they're driving, with another 50c on top next year 💰. On top of that: pay transparency, the right to union representation, and personal accident insurance. That's not a tweak — that's a proper floor under people's feet.

Now, before anyone gets too excited: this order is about Uber Eats and food delivery couriers specifically, not UberX passenger drivers 🛵🍔. So don't expect a 25% bump on your next rideshare fare just yet. But here's why it still matters to us: this comes out of Australia's "employee-like worker" reforms — a regulatory mechanism built specifically to reach into the gig economy and set minimum standards where none existed. Once that door's open for delivery, passenger rideshare is the obvious next target ⚖️.

Positive or negative for NZ drivers? Genuinely positive — eventually. 🙂 It's proof that "flexible work" and enforceable minimum pay aren't mutually exclusive, no matter how many times these platforms tell us otherwise. Uber's own newsroom is now spinning this as "leading the industry" 🙄 — funny how fast a company embraces "fair pay" the second a regulator forces its hand, after years of lobbying against exactly this kind of rule everywhere else.

Right now, this changes nothing for us. NZ has no Fair Work Commission, no minimum standards order, nothing binding. Our own government just voted against the ILO gig worker treaty a few weeks back, and NZTA's still treating rideshare like it's 2015 😤. So today, this is a headline from Australia, not a payday here.

Longer term, though, it's a data point worth keeping. Australia and the UK have both now shown gig platforms will pay properly when regulators make them. NZ usually follows Australia on employment law eventually — slowly, reluctantly, and usually only after drivers do the hard yards fighting for it (see our own ERA back-pay claims). This is exactly the kind of precedent worth waving in front of MPs next time they tell us minimum standards for rideshare drivers are "unworkable" 🏛️.

Keep this one in your back pocket, Kiwi drivers. It's ammunition. 🔋
